Baby Sulcata Tortoise Care 101
A Guide to Your New Hatchling
Bringing home a baby African Sulcata Tortoise is an exciting commitment. While these tiny hatchlings are adorable, they grow quickly and have very specific needs to ensure they develop healthy shells and live long, happy lives.
Here is the essential breakdown of what you need to know for habitat setup, diet, and daily health care.
1. Habitat Setup & Environment
Baby Sulcatas need a controlled, indoor environment to protect them from extreme weather and predators while they are small.
The Enclosure: Start with a "tortoise table" or a large, enclosed terrarium. Enclosed setups are highly recommended for babies because they hold heat and moisture better.
Temperature: Sulcatas love the heat! Maintain a basking spot of 95°F to 100°F, and an ambient (overall) temperature around 80°F to 85°F. It should never drop below 75°F at night.
Lighting: A high-quality UVB bulb (10.0 or 12%) is absolutely mandatory. Without UVB, your baby cannot process calcium, which leads to metabolic bone disease and soft shells. Leave the lights on for 12 hours a day.
Humidity & Substrate: Unlike adults, babies need high humidity (around 80%) to prevent "pyramiding" (abnormal shell bumping). Use a moisture-holding substrate like coconut coir, orchid bark, or cypress mulch. Provide a "humid hide" filled with damp sphagnum moss for them to sleep in.
2. Diet & Nutrition
Sulcatas are grazing herbivores. Their diet must be high in fiber, low in protein, and completely free of fruit or animal proteins.
The Daily Menu: 70–80% of their diet should be grasses and hay (like Bermuda, Orchard, or Timothy grass). The rest can be safe, leafy greens and weeds (dandelion greens, clover, turnip greens, and hibiscus leaves).
What to Avoid: Never feed your tortoise dog/cat food, fruits (their digestive tracts cannot handle sugar), or iceberg lettuce (it has no nutritional value).
Supplements: Dust their food with a high-quality reptile calcium powder 2–3 times a week to support healthy bone and shell growth.
3. Daily Routine & Health Monitoring
Consistency is key when raising a hatchling. Make these steps part of your daily routine to monitor their health:
Daily Soaks: Soak your baby tortoise every single day for 15–20 minutes in shallow, warm water (about 85°F). The water should only come up to the line where their top and bottom shells meet. This is critical for hydration and helps them pass waste.
Health Checks: A healthy baby is active and alert. Check that their eyes are clear and open, their nose is free of bubbles or discharge, and they have a healthy appetite.
Shell Growth: Keep an eye on their shell. While hatchling shells have a slight natural springiness, they should feel sturdy. Smooth growth is the goal—if the individual scutes (shell plates) start to peak or raise, you likely need to increase the humidity in their enclosure.
